Why Find Well-Being as a Tennis Player
The well-being of a tennis player is a journey to find your own values. We all have to make choices, but choices to care for our own well-being are crucial to us as human beings. Finding your own true values requires self-challenge, stepping outside your comfort zone. By trying to put your own tennis hobby ahead of work and clearing space for it in your calendar, you can find a whole new world. A world where you get to participate in different events, travel and best of all, to spend time with people who are also on their own discovery path.
But then to the most unfortunate things. All this requires deeds, perhaps not the biggest in the world but deeds. For example, are you ready to set your alarm for 5.50am to get on court at my club, Taivallahti, in Helsinki, for morning training after the first smoothie? Or are you interested in a national tournament in Hyvinkää when the alternative is a summer weekend at your country cottage? What about the events within your own club, taking 4 hours of the weekend’s precious time?
Wait a minute! We were just talking about values and putting your own well-being first? What would be more important to you than taking care of your own strength in nice company? I suggest that a person whose values come from deep inside lead to an exercise and social lifestyle which is more present in the rest of their life as well.
What can a tennis player do for their own well-being in everyday life? The answer is wide-ranging, but I will deal with it from one point of view. In an ideal situation, a person would make choices according to their own values all day and be well prepared for every new situation. It is of course impossible, but I have seen the potential to get very close to maximum performances in terms of preparation. It’s impressive to watch if anything.
Respiratory exercises help us keep focus on what matters to us. Start your day by focussing on good posture, chin up-inhaling through your nose calmly to five, counting and exhaling gently, counting to five. If you think of any thoughts, accept them but let them slip away like a cloud. Do this for 2-3 minutes each day.
Rest and moving to new places are important. Life is going to be very different when the focus is on taking breaks and on preparing instead of doing things. Preparing for a new situation on the way in the car is easy, tuning in to music, is one of the oldest ways. It’s easy to put yourself on a fitness bike or treadmill at the club before classes, as physical and mental preparation goes hand in hand. I think the rest of your group will be impressed when you take care of your own well-being as part of preparing for tennis class.
When you dare to make new kinds of choices for your own well-being you can surprise yourself in finding something you didn’t first look for: your own life.
