Cardio Tennis Approach & Volley Drill

In this post we join inspire2coach director, Richard Marklow while he delivers a cardio tennis course to a group of coaches at Bolton Arena in Lancashire (filmed live). In this first part of the course, Richard demonstrates how deliver an approach & volley drill to keep your Cardio Tennis Group enthused and their hearts-pumping!

If you’re not familiar with it, Cardio Tennis is a group fitness class (on a tennis court) playing tennis! It’s fun, fast-paced and sociable – suitable for all ages and abilities.

Purpose of the approach & volley drill – increase speed of the net approach.

This cardio tennis drill is divided into three stages.

Stage 1

  • Firstly, halve the group.
  • A receiver will then start at the baseline.
  • Another player will start at the beginning of a ladder.
  • A third player will start in the corner of the court.

Stage 2

Secondly, two balls are fed to each player. One for the approach and one for the volley. Alternatively, two coaches may feed for the approach and volley because the two players approach from two groups – left and right on the court.

  • After the approach and volley, players then complete the ladder.
  • Position the ladder alongside the court. This aspect of the drill attends to footwork.
  • Complete the ladder and then progress to do 5 star-jumps. (Or 8 to increase cardio intensity).

Stage 3 (to intensify cardio levels)

Players can add toe-taps before approaching from the baseline again!

Cardio Tennis: Approach & Volley Drill

Top Tips!

  • Punch balls with racket for the feed. Consequently, coaches increase feeding pace and subsequent cardio intensity.
  • Coaches should project their voice – this increases cardio energy in players.
