Tennis 24/7 Coach Academy: Summary of Receiving Skills Part 11

Summary of Receiving Skills (Part 11)

This series emphasises the importance of developing good receiving skills from a young age through fun, dynamic game-based activities.

Receiving Skills are a big part of our coaching philosophy at i2c. We hope that this series of videos has emphasised the importance of developing good receiving skills from a young age, through a series of fun and dynamic game-based activities.

Key take-aways for coaches

  • Tennis is not just a sending sport; receiving skills are vital in helping players develop their game
  • Work on a series of simple check points in every activity – reading the ball early and before the ball crosses the net
  • Look for consistently good positioning and balance, where possible with the outside leg behind the ball
  • Look for the triangle as means to judging optimal contact points
  • Look for players who can play with 2 feet on the court, as an indicator of great receiving skills

Tennis 24/7 Coach Academy: Receiving Skills Part 7

Receiving Skills Part 7

Height & depth rally: calling short, medium and deep balls before the ball crosses the net to challenge players reading of the incoming ball.

Height and depth rally

In this video, Mark progresses the players to a rally activity calling short medium and deep balls before the ball crosses the net, as a way of challenging the players reading of depth of the incoming ball.

Key take-aways for coaches

  • Make sure that players call and move early to show good reading of the depth of the incoming ball
  • Contact the ball using the triangle
  • As a progression, try this drill first with single feeds before progressing to a cooperative rally

First step to building receiving skills in young players (video)

Question: Is tennis a sending or receiving game?
I believe that traditionally tennis is taught as a sending game – rather than a receiving game. When you watch this clip – and the ones to follow – think about how we can help our players to be better at receiving the incoming ball.

As coaches, we spend a lot of time with our players training them to hit balls. We do a lot of hitting repetition. While that’s really important, if players are struggling to be in a position to hit the ball well, then we need to look at more than just their ability to hit the ball, we need to look at how well they can receive the incoming ball too.

Why “direction” is a great first step when building receiving skills

In this first video on receiving skills, I’m going to start us off by looking at the direction of the incoming ball. I start there because it’s the first thing that you see about the ball coming towards you. You can tell the direction of the incoming ball before you can identify other characteristics of the incoming ball. The second reason to start with direction is that the direction doesn’t change! Once the ball has been hit by your opponent, the direction is fixed. So, if we can be really fast at working out the direction the ball is coming from, then even as red and orange players, the player has a really good head-start on knowing which part of the court to move to.

In this video, I go in-depth into a short exercise that you can work on with young players to help them learn to read and judge the direction of the ball. The beauty of this exercise is the way that it also builds footwork and positioning skills.

Build receiving skills by helping mini-tennis players anticipate the direction of the incoming ball (video)

What are you doing March 22-27? Personally, we at i2c will be making time to attend the World’s first online tennis conference. Yep, you heard right! An online tennis conference. The World’s first. The reality is that coaches don’t learn by simply attending courses. Social media, YouTube and the internet are fundamental parts of our lives and our first port of call when we want to learn something is often to go online.

I2c’s Director and leading coach educator Mark Tennant will be one of the 25 leading coaches presenting at the event. Registration is FREE – but you must register to hear the session.

Mark will be covering:
– the value of Receiving Skills in developing young players and why they are so critical to technical development
– the 5Rs of the stroke production cycle
– the 4 controls
– great drills to teach and develop receiving skills in your young players

To get you in the zone, we’re sharing a video where Mark demonstrates a drill to help mini-tennis players learn to anticipate the direction of the incoming ball!

Go here to register for the Tennis Technique Summit http://tennistechniquesummit.com – registration is FREE, but you must register to hear the session.
