How to Correct the Ball Toss on the Serve by Taking the Player’s Weight Off the Back Foot

How to Correct the Ball Toss on the Serve by Taking the Player's Weight Off the Back Foot

We apologise for the audio-feedback! This clip was filmed live in possibly the worst audio setting ever; an echoing gym hall! However, we thought this short clip on how to correct the ball toss on the serve was still worth sharing.

Early November I was working with coaches in Romania on teaching the serve. I looked specifically at the importance of having the weight transfer onto the front when the ball is released from the throwing arm. Serving with the weight on the back foot starts a whole chain of linked problems.

What’s the biggest give-away that the child’s weight is on the back-foot when they’re serving? Watch your junior-player when they’re serving; the majority of kids will be moving their front foot when they are serving. The front foot moving indicates that the child has their weight on their back foot – which will have follow on impacts on their ball toss and balance. When the child’s weight is on the back foot, the ball toss will go behind the player – upsetting the player’s serve rhythm and balance. When the ball is going behind the player, they will need hit from below the ball… and they will then change their grip to do that.

You see what’s going on here! One small issue leads to a ton of problems.

Developing the Serve: a Case Study From Finland (video)

It’s always unbelievably exciting when you see your coaching have a dramatic impact on a player’s technique in a single session. It’s really the stuff that we, as coaches, live for!

This side-by-side shows the BEFORE AND AFTER.

Watch the sequence below to see how we worked on the player’s serve in increments!

Increment #1

This clip shows the player’s serve action at the start of our session. Note: No build up of rhythm on the serve and no balance during or after the forward swing. Also note the grip change on the first part of her service motion.

Increment #2

We wanted to focus on the rhythm of the service action (Slow, Medium and Fast). Look out for the longer take back of the racket as she starts to understand the service action and build up of acceleration. As a result of this change, we are now able to see a smooth action to allow us to build towards out next intervention.

Increment #3

We are now able to position and secure her feet to control her balance. You will also notice how she really focuses on a consistent ball toss whilst maintaining a stable position.

Increment #4

Finally we focused on her maintaining a continental grip throughout the whole service motion.

Following on, we now have some basic fundamentals in place to be able to develop her serve.

Developing the serve with green ball players (Video)

Many of our members and customers will already be familiar with our hugely popular Developing the Serve program. Today we introduce the latest instalment, Developing the serve with green ball players.

We use a tactical approach to structuring serve coaching; it gives you great teaching points for the tennis serve for green ball players and provides you with strategies to get your players serving with a purpose. We highlight what’s required to serve effectively on the green court – clearly highlighting the changes from Orange Ball.

If you only work with green ball players – you don’t need to watch the Red Ball and Orange Ball program; these videos stand alone to provide you with a rock-solid foundation for transitioning green ball players to the requirements of the serve at full ball and the performance level. However, if you are looking to follow the program from start to finish, this Green Ball program builds on the learning process developed in the Red Ball and Orange Ball programs.

We’ve split the program into 9 sessions so that you can work through at your own pace. So now there is nothing stopping you! Get ready to build  your own exceptional program for teaching the serve to green ball players.

I’m grateful for the talented junior, Comrie, who is featured in the videos to help me with the step-by-step demonstrations. Thanks also to our talented cameraman, Rob Smith.
