i2c Quick Fix: Helping Players Understand Ball Toss Placement (video)

A lot of players get anxious about their serve and try to change their ball toss without really knowing what will help. It could be that when serving they “collapse” onto the ball, perhaps they toss too far forward and send the ball firmly into the net! In many cases what they need is to understand where to toss the ball for different placements of the serve.

This quick fix helps to give players a feel for how their ball toss placement will effect where the ball goes! Take a look and try these fixes with your players.

Tennis 24/7 Coach Academy: Developing the Serve With Adults Part 6

Developing the Serve With Adult Players: Part 6

Adult players often don’t spend many hours on court; we demonstrate how you can provide fast improvement by working on the serve rhythm.

In Part 6, the final in our series, Developing the Serve With Adults, Richard works with Nishal whose main frustration with his serve is poor consistency. Nishal plays a couple of times a month so corrections that need a lot of practise are impractical.

Richard demonstrates how to a few key changes, including working on the the serve “rhythm” can provide fast improvement for a player who doesn’t spend many hours on court.

Techniques introduced in Part 2 and used in this clip

  1. To get a nice secure starting position, ensure the players alignment is solid. Make sure the following are all in line:
    • Feet
    • Hips
    • Shoulders
    • Then make sure the racket points to the target.
  2. Stretch the contact point up higher is to ensure the ball tossing arm is straight and stretching up.
  3. Count through the serve  – 1, 2, 3 – to build rhythm and tempo. Keep the count smooth with no glitches.
  4. Finding a key word (like “no glitches“) can help players to master a technique.

Key Take-aways for Coaches

  • For players who don’t play often it’s important to prioritise corrections based on what can be achieved quickly and don’t need a lot of practise to correct. Often that means securing some of the basic technique rather than trying to change the grip.

Tennis 24/7 Coach Academy: Developing the Serve With Adult Players

Developing the Serve With Adults: Part 1

Teaching the serve to adult players requires a different, generally less structured approach. Part 1 in the series.

In this, the first part of our series on Developing the Serve for Adult Players, Richard Marklow, Director of inspire2coach, talks about the differences in teaching the serve to adult players compared to a more structured approach when working with younger players. Richard then guides you through a typical scenario when a coach works with an adult player giving detailed coaching tips and effective methods of coaching styles to help develop your adult players serve.

Pick up valuable teaching points, ideas for drills, common faults to watch out for and solutions to take into your next coaching session with adults.

Key Take-aways for Coaches

  • Working with adults is very different to working with juniors and there are different decisions to make.
  • Understand your player; what do they need for their serve? Things to look at include their background, experience and how much time they’re able to put into developing the serve.
  • Players who’ve played for a while have existing habits that you need to work with, whereas with beginners, you can work through progressions.
  • Go carefully and build confidence.
  • Use the serve more in lessons
  • Observe and assess serve effectiveness
